Step-by-Step Instructions for Homestyle Hamburger Stew
  1. Begin by prepping your vegetables for the Homestyle Hamburger Stew. Peel and dice the potatoes into ½-inch pieces, slice the carrots into ¼-inch coins, and finely dice the onion. Mince the garlic.
  2. In a large pot, heat a splash of oil over medium heat. Add the lean ground beef and cook for about 4-5 minutes, breaking it into chunks as it browns.
  3. Next, add the carrots, diced celery, and onion to the pot. Sauté these vegetables for about 8 minutes until the onions are translucent and soft, stirring occasionally.
  4. Stir in the diced potatoes, undrained canned tomatoes, beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, dried thyme, salt, and pepper. If using Maggi sauce, add it along with the bay leaf. Bring to a gentle simmer.
  5. Cover the pot and let the stew simmer on low heat for 20-25 minutes until the potatoes are fork-tender.
  6. Whisk together cornstarch and cold water until smooth. Slowly add this mixture to the pot, stirring continuously. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until the stew thickens.
  7. Finally, stir in the frozen green peas and corn, allowing them to heat through for an additional 2-3 minutes.
  8. Before serving, taste the stew and adjust the seasonings as needed. Ladle the hearty stew into bowls and enjoy.
