  1. Soak the bamboo skewers in water for at least 30 minutes.
  2. In a small saucepan, combine soy sauce, mirin, sake, and sugar; heat until sugar dissolves and simmer for 10 minutes.
  3. Cut chicken thighs into uniform pieces and thread onto skewers, alternating with optional vegetables if desired.
  4. Preheat the grill to high heat and cook skewers for 10-15 minutes, turning frequently.
  5. Brush with tare sauce during the last few minutes of cooking.
  6. Remove from grill, serve hot with additional tare sauce on the side.
