  • 1 block extra firm tofu
  • 2 tablespoons cornstarch for coating
For the Sauce
  • 3 tablespoons tamari gluten-free soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil extra virgin recommended
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tablespoon ginger grated
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes adjust to taste
  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste or ketchup as substitute
  • 1 tablespoon maple syrup or agave syrup
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar or apple cider vinegar

Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Press the extra firm tofu for 30 to 60 minutes to remove excess moisture.
  2. In a saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat, then sauté minced garlic and grated ginger for 2-3 minutes.
  3. Add red pepper flakes, maple syrup, tamari, rice vinegar, and tomato paste; whisk until combined and cook until it thickens.
  4. Cut the pressed tofu into even one-inch cubes.
  5. Toss the tofu cubes with cornstarch and a drizzle of olive oil until evenly coated.
  6. Heat olive oil in a frying pan and fry the coated tofu until golden brown and crispy, about 10-15 minutes.
  7. Reduce heat and pour the sauce over the tofu; toss to coat and cook for an additional 1-2 minutes.
  8. Serve immediately over jasmine rice or rice noodles, garnished with sesame seeds and scallions.
