Method
 

Cake Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease three 8-inch cake pans and line the bottoms with parchment paper.
  2. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add Nutella, eggs, and vanilla.
  4. Gradually mix the dry ingredients with the buttermilk until just combined.
  5. Divide the batter among the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
Frosting Preparation
  1. In a heatproof bowl, combine egg whites, granulated sugar, and salt. Set over simmering water, whisking until warm and sugar dissolves.
  2. Remove from heat and beat with an electric mixer until glossy and fluffy. Gradually add room-temperature butter and Nutella until smooth.
Assembling the Cake
  1. Once the layers are cool, place one layer on a platter and spread frosting on top. Repeat with the second layer.
  2. Frost the top and sides, then chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
  3. Slice and serve, garnished with chocolate shavings if desired.
