Cake Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease three 8-inch cake pans and line the bottoms with parchment paper.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
- In another bowl, beat the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add Nutella, eggs, and vanilla.
- Gradually mix the dry ingredients with the buttermilk until just combined.
- Divide the batter among the prepared pans and bake for 25-30 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
- Let the cakes cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
Frosting Preparation
- In a heatproof bowl, combine egg whites, granulated sugar, and salt. Set over simmering water, whisking until warm and sugar dissolves.
- Remove from heat and beat with an electric mixer until glossy and fluffy. Gradually add room-temperature butter and Nutella until smooth.
Assembling the Cake
- Once the layers are cool, place one layer on a platter and spread frosting on top. Repeat with the second layer.
- Frost the top and sides, then chill in the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
- Slice and serve, garnished with chocolate shavings if desired.
