Method
 

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and butter a 9x13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt 3 tablespoons of unsalted butter. Add 3 cloves of minced garlic and sauté for 30 seconds.
  3. Pour in 1 cup of heavy cream and 1 cup of milk. Add a pinch of salt, black pepper, paprika, and nutmeg. Stir gently for 2-3 minutes until warm.
  4. Layer half of the thinly sliced sweet potatoes in the baking dish and season lightly with salt and pepper. Pour half of the cream mixture over the sweet potatoes, then add half of the cheese if using.
  5. Add the remaining sweet potato slices, season lightly, and pour the rest of the cream mixture over the top. Sprinkle with remaining cheese.
  6. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes.
  7. Remove the foil and bake for another 15-25 minutes until the top is golden-brown and sweet potatoes are fork-tender.
  8. Let the dish rest for about 10 minutes before serving.
